Depending on the age of your car you may have trouble fixing any repairs yourself.  With the technology of today’s car you need specialized equipment to even diagnose the problem.   However, you should still be able to handle simple repairs on your own.  The owner’s manual will be able to tell you what products can be used on your car.  If you have an area where you can work on the vehicle you can keep your car in good shape.

If your engine won’t start you can check out several problems that it could be before having to take it to a mechanic.  A voltage meter can test a vehicle overnight or you could just see if the headlights are bright or dim.  If it is determined that the battery is at fault you can buy the appropriate battery.  Bright lights without the battery being the issue could mean that the starter isn’t working and a mechanic may be necessary.

Brakes can go soft, spongy or have a grinding noise when applied.  They may even go all the way to the floor before they stop you.  A visual inspection can often find a leak of the brake fluid.  It could be that the master cylinder is at fault or that the axle bearings have failed.  If you don’t have the knowledge of how to test these problems, taking them to a qualified brake specialist would be your best option.  Brakes could be a do it yourself car repair, but you may want to use a professional.

Checking the tire pressure and tread can save you from needing tire repairs.  If you keep your tires rotated and your car aligned and balanced regularly this will also help in preventing tire car repairs.  However, things happen and you can fix a leaky tire yourself.  If the puncture is too large for you to repair a qualified tire dealer may still be able to repair it for you.  Should you have to purchase new tires a dealer can mount and balance them for you easier than you could.

Steering issues may manifest themselves by the drifting of the car or a pulling to one side.  This car repair could be taken care of by getting your vehicle aligned and balanced.

Changing the oil on a regular basis will also help you keep your engine running well.  While this is more a maintenance issue it could lead to a car repair if the vehicle has an oil pressure problem that goes unattended.  Whether you do the car repairs yourself or use a mechanic you can prolong the life of your car.
